Mammography is still the most reliable method used to detect changes in breasts. Screening mammography is recommended after the age of 40 as a basic check of women without positive family history of breast cancer, or even earlier, after the age of 35 for women with positive family history. The best time for screening mammography is between 8 and 12 days of the period. In the event when there is a medical indication, or any change in breasts, mammography should be done immediately. Breast cancer is one of the most common neoplasia among women and therefore, early diagnosis of this disease is of intrinsic importance.
Early detection of breast cancer is important before a tumor reaches critical size. Great value of mammography, as a screening method, is to detect minimal and occult lesions. In addition to malignant lesions, mammography can also detect some benign changes.
